Shoulder pain may appear while reaching for a top shelf, putting dishes away, playing sports, working overhead, or trying to find a comfortable sleeping position. Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint supported by cartilage, fluid-filled bursae, muscles, and tendons. When the mechanics of these structures are disrupted, pain, weakness, stiffness, or restricted motion can result.

Abnormal tracking as you lift your arm can place pressure on soft tissues. Overuse, overhead activity, repetitive work, sports, and poor posture can irritate tendons and make elevation painful.

Rotator cuff problems can follow injury, overuse, poor posture, or age-related changes. Symptoms may include a deep ache, arm weakness, difficulty reaching behind your back, and pain that disrupts sleep.

Frozen shoulder can develop after a period of immobilization and causes a painful loss of motion. Arthritis may also contribute to pain, weakness, stiffness, and difficulty with normal daily activities.
At Knox Physical Therapy, your evaluation examines range of motion, strength, coordination, medical history, joint mobility, and the mechanics of your shoulder motion. Once the cause of your pain is established, your physical therapist can combine gentle manual therapy to restore normal joint movement and ease soft-tissue restrictions with specific therapeutic exercises to restore strength and correct muscle activation. You will also learn techniques to build confidence in movement and help prevent future shoulder problems.
“For the first time in over ten years I am pain free. I had shoulder surgery, and Lee helped me regain 100% of use. He took the time to explain what I was doing incorrectly and motivated me to push through.” — Amber J.
